Private label clothing is manufactured to your own design, fit and fabric spec and sold under your brand; white label clothing is a factory’s existing stock product relabelled with your brand. Private label gives you an exclusive product at a 50-piece minimum with a sample stage; white label is faster and cheaper for very small tests but every competitor can sell the same garment.

The two terms are used interchangeably by suppliers who benefit from the confusion. The difference decides whether your customers can buy your exact product from someone else, so it is worth being precise. This guide defines both, compares them on cost, control, speed and risk, and says which suits which stage of a brand.

When does white label make sense?

For a demand test under 30 pieces, for merch that will never be reordered, or when the drop date is inside two weeks. The cost per piece is high and the product is generic, but nothing has to be developed. Wholesale blanks decorated locally are the common form; see cut and sew vs blanks for that comparison in detail.

When does private label make sense?

As soon as the product matters to the brand. If the fit is part of the identity, if you plan to reorder, if you sell at a price where customers compare fabric weight, or if you do not want a competitor to buy the same blank from the same catalogue. At 50 pieces the cost is level with premium white label; at 100 pieces it is lower. Everything private label includes at Mike Apparel is on the private label clothing manufacturer page.

What does a private label programme involve?

  1. Define the productReference garment or tech pack, fabric weight, colours, decoration, labels.
  2. SampleOne garment made as bulk will be, 7–10 days. Approve fit, fabric and branding together.
  3. Bulk50+ pieces per design, 2–3 weeks, labels applied on the line.
  4. ReorderSame block and fabric lot references on file; no minimum, no sampling.

What are the risks of each?

White label risk is commercial: a stock product with a logo has no moat, and wholesalers change blanks, colours and fits without notice, so a reorder may not match. Private label risk is operational: you depend on the factory getting the sample right and holding the block, which is why the sample stage and a factory that keeps records matter. Ask the twelve questions before choosing one.

Is there a middle ground?

Yes: private label blanks. We manufacture blank tees and blank hoodies to your block and fabric with your labels, undecorated, for brands that print locally. The garment is exclusive; the decoration stays in your hands. It is the usual first step for brands moving off wholesale blanks. The label options themselves are described in woven labels, hang tags and packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Is private label more expensive than white label?

Per piece at 50 units, slightly; from about 100 units, private label from a factory like ours is usually cheaper than premium white label plus relabelling, because there is no wholesaler margin.

Can I switch from white label to private label later?

Yes, and most brands do. Send the white label garment you have been selling and we build your own block from it, so the switch is invisible to customers except for the label.

Is white label legal?

Yes. Relabelling a garment you bought is legal as long as fibre content, origin and care labelling stay accurate.

What about 'private label' on Alibaba?

Often white label with your logo added. Ask whether the block, fabric and construction are made to your spec or picked from a catalogue; only the first is private label.
